The Greater Glider (Petauroides volans) is a nocturnal marsupial native to the forests of eastern Australia, known for its large size, fluffy fur, and ability to glide between trees using a membrane that stretches from its elbows to its ankles.
This remarkable glider is currently listed as endangered primarily due to habitat destruction and fragmentation. Logging, land clearing for agriculture, and urban development have led to significant loss of its old-growth forest habitat, which is essential for providing nesting hollows and food sources. Additionally, climate change poses a serious threat by altering the glider's environment and food availability. Bushfires, which have increased in frequency and intensity due to global warming, further exacerbate the loss of suitable habitat. Conservation efforts focusing on protecting and restoring their natural habitats are crucial for the survival of the Greater Glider.
