Sloths, known for their slow and deliberate movements, are native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Despite their seemingly relaxed lifestyle, they face significant threats that have led to their endangered status. Habitat loss due to deforestation is the primary threat, as the trees they rely on for food, shelter, and transportation are rapidly disappearing. Additionally, sloths are vulnerable to poaching and the illegal pet trade, as well as being frequently injured or killed by vehicles when forced to traverse cleared land. Their slow metabolism and specific dietary needs make them particularly sensitive to environmental changes, further exacerbating their risk of extinction. Protecting their habitats and curbing illegal trade are crucial steps in ensuring their survival.
