The yellow-crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea), a striking and charismatic bird native to Indonesia and East Timor, is critically endangered due to a combination of human activities and environmental challenges. Deforestation and habitat degradation, driven by logging, agricultural expansion, and urban development, have drastically reduced their natural habitats. These cockatoos are also heavily targeted by the illegal pet trade, valued for their vibrant plumage and engaging behavior, leading to significant population declines in the wild. Additionally, the introduction of invasive species, such as rats and snakes, poses a threat by preying on their eggs and young.
Conservation efforts, including habitat protection, stricter enforcement of wildlife trade regulations, and breeding programs, are essential to prevent the extinction of this beautiful and unique bird.
